Digital Distribution and Distrokid


I recently started researching all the digital distributors to compare their prices and features.  I was looking for a way to get my music out to all the main digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify.  I already setup a Google Play artist hub account awhile back and noticed positive feedback and a steady amount of streams.  After a few weeks I found a YouTube video that talked about Distrokid.  I liked that the yearly fee was low and you didn't need to pay for each album uploaded.  The best part is the artist keeps 100% of the royalties.

I ended up signing up for the musician plus account that is $35.99 a year.  This gave me the option to list my record label After Audio, which helped me out later on.  The whole process for uploading my music was simple and every step is automated.


It took anywhere from a few days to a little over a week to get my albums live on each store, and I got emails with links to each album on each store.  The only issue I experienced was that my albums we're merged with another artist on Spotify, but Distrokid provided a way to fix that.

Amazon used to offer an Artist Central option to customize an artist profile, but that process is now automated.  Basically, you can only upload your albums to Amazon.  The problem for me was providing a link so people could find all my albums in one place.  Here is where the musician plus option helped me.  I ran an advanced search on Amazon for the artist "Overtone" and the label "After Audio".  I then copied the link for the search to use later on.




I noticed that other YouTube channels use Bitly and goo.gl to create custom short URLS, but I wanted to create links that I could easily remember.  I ended up creating subdomains for each store and one that links to a page that lists all the stores.
