For my recent albums I've been using the Reason Rack Extension Selig Leveler to even out vocals in a mix. The Selig Leveler applys upward compression across a specified range of the dynamic spectrum. You set a target by monitoring the loudest and softest parts of the vocal.
The Selig Leveler is very transparent and avoids any pumping sounds that other compressors may have if set incorrectly.
